Siyu Sun is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Professors Ronan O'Hora and Carole Presland. She previously studied in New Zealand under the tutelage of Associate Professor Rae de Lisle at The University of Auckland School of Music.
As a concerto soloist, Siyu has performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Wellington Chamber Orchestra. She has performed in venues throughout New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, most recently at The Royal Albert Hall, St. James Church Piccadilly, Milton Court Concert Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatory Hall, Princess Alexandra Hall, The Spanish Embassy, Auckland Town Hall, and Queensland Conservatorium Hall.
Siyu is the grand winner of the 2021 Guildhall Romantic Prize in London, the Auckland Chamber Music Society Prize, and the New Zealand National Concerto 50th Anniversary Competition where she performed Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Last year, she was awarded a special commendation in the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition, and received second prize in the Bromsgrove International Music Competition. In 2022 she was a finalist in the keyboard section of the Royal Overseas League competition where she won a special Overseas Award, the Tait Memorial Prize for an Outstanding Australian/New Zealand Musician, and was a semi-finalist in the Birmingham International Piano Competition.
Also a passionate chamber musician, she was invited to perform in the 2022 BBC Total Immersion Concert in collaboration with the Barbican Centre. Siyu was also selected to perform in a two-piano team as part of GSMD’s Summer Chamber Music Festival of July 2021 and in 2022 is scheduled to perform with a Wind Quintet, in collaboration with the distinguished flautist Philippa Davies. Siyu has performed in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra on both French horn and orchestral piano.
Siyu is generously supported by the Guildhall School Trust, Patricia Pratt the Kiwi Music Scholarship Trust, Anne Bellam, Inspire Foundation, the Dame Malvina Major Foundation, Kathleen Marydon Travelling Scholarship, and the Jack McGill Music Scholarship. Previously a Haydn Staples APO Piano scholar, Siyu also holds prizes including the Best New Zealand Pianist Prize, the Virtuoso Prize, and the Blues Award for most Meritorious Performance in the Arts and Culture.
