The Lewis Eady National Piano Competition and National String Competition, presented by the Hill Family Foundation for Art and Music, joined forces for a unique 2022 competition in a nimble COVID pivot. The limited number of classical music lovers were given a rare chance to experience the talents of some of New Zealand’s best young musicians across the three-day Competition, comprising two days of Semi-Finals followed by a Grand Final which took place on 12 February at Diocesan School Performing Arts Centre. The Grand Final was also live-streamed online and reached over 5,000 views.
Competition Director Anne Rodda says, “We wanted to do right by the competitors who have lost so much at such a vital time in their career development and, because our sponsors and donors stood right beside us at every step, we were happily able to make it happen for them. The competitors showed remarkable resilience, and are a real inspiration.”
We want to express our thanks again to all our sponsors Chiron Group NZ, Craigs Investment Partners, Nockie’s Palette, Lewis Eady, The University of Auckland School of Music, Diocesan School for Girls, and Patagonia Chocolates.
Prize donors were IRMTNZ (Auckland Branch), Lewis Eady Charitable Trust, SOUNZ, Trinity College London, Dame Jenny Gibbs, Frances Bell, The Becroft Foundation, Graeme and Di Edwards, and Eric Johnston and Alison Buchanan.
